This page shows the development of my latest piece of artwork.  You will be able to see how it develops and some of the methods I use to create it.

A Beach with a View

This scene is a combination of two views of Eastbourne seafront which, when put together create the look and feel of the unspoilt views at the western end of the promenade. Rarely crowded even in the height of the summer, these beaches provide a quiet place to admire the view.

Detail

Detail from Beach with a View

Snapshot 6, When the deep colours of the palm tree are completed the composition finally takes shape.

Snapshot 5, The bright pink and purple flowers are focussing attention in the foreground. As the colours get stronger the cliffs begin to recede into the horizon.

Snapshot 4, Now I am concentrating on the plants above the path. To avoid the path cutting across the painting, the flowers must reach over to the smaller bushes.

Snapshot 3, I begin to build up the details in the foreground using stronger colours  to bring them forward.

Snapshot 2, Now I have applied more colour washes to the sea and beach to build up the scene. The breakwater provides the first line of detail and is carefully painted to bring it forward of the distant rocks.

Snapshot 1, Having sketched out the composition and applied masking fluid to the areas I want to stay white, I begin by putting a blue wash across the sky. I carefully lift out some of the colour with a wet brush and paper towels to get the cloud effect. Then I begin on the cliffs in the distance.
